Martingale Collars
Martingale collars
are the best kind of general purpose collar. They're ideal for preventing dogs from backing or wriggling out of the collar, ensuring your dog can't get loose and hurt itself.
Their design also prevents dogs from choking to death if the collar or leash catches on something, since they tighten only enough to prevent dogs from slipping out. A buckle, while not essential, will make it much easier to don and remove the collar. Below is a picture of a martingale collar with a buckle.
Slip Lead
Using a slip lead
rather than a leash allows a handler to control a dog without having to touch its neck and risk being bitten. They are also best for getting control of a dog that is off-leash or collarless. By opening a slip lead all the way, the lead can be put loosly around a dog's neck and fitted from a safe distance. Slip leads are also conveniently simple and easy to use and stored by sling it over your shoulder. Below is an image of a properly fitted slip lead.
